The Community Track: Leading Others Forward
Building a Chapter That Outlasts One Leader
- About this session
- A summit session on chapter leadership and legacy. This readout is based on the slides photographed in the room.
- What the session explored
- The presenter walked through starting a semester (outreach, interest meetings, then regular club meetings), a sample welcome email and a semester timeline. A “Leadership Opportunities” slide recommended holding elections early, discussing roles with elected members and clarifying the difference between roles, and described peer leaders who help with set-up, check-in and induction steps as a stepping stone to leadership. A closing slide paired a philosophy — Human > Student > Leader — with consistency (document and share information early and often; state clear expectations, including around changes) and outcomes such as student resilience, transition plans, service events and more leadership opportunities.
- Kimberly’s reflection
- Legacy includes the opportunities and guidance we leave for others. Clear roles, shared timelines and small entry-level jobs let new people step in, so the work does not depend on one person.
- For a new member
- Ask your chapter what small role you could take on — check-in, set-up, outreach. It is a low-pressure way to start leading.
- Next-step question
- What would someone need from me to pick up my role next year?
